New York: It pays to do your homework

With some many different things to see and do in New York it is sometimes impossible to fit everything you want to do into a short break to New York. From skyscrapers to celebrity spotting there is a huge range of things to do and sometimes not enough time to fit them all in, so it is best to research exactly what you want from your New York break. In order to make sure you visit the attractions that interest you, here is a quick guide to the most popular tourist attractions in the city.
 
One of the most iconic images in the world is surely the Statue of Liberty, standing proudly on Liberty Island. The statue was originally presented to American by France, as a symbol of International friendship. The statue attracts thousands of visitors every year who reach it by the daily ferries to and from the island. Another towering landmark is the Empire State Building which stands more than a quarter of a mile into the sky above the bustling heart of Manhattan. A trip to the observatory on the 86th floor presents panoramic views from within a glass enclosure, not for the faint hearted! It does however present breath taking views of the city and has attracted more than 110 million visitors since it opened to the public in 1931.

The legendary Times Square is a must see for fans of the bright lights and big city atmosphere. The home of many annual public gatherings including the legendary New Years Eve celebrations, the atmosphere is positively electric. Neon signs and giant screens line the buildings that include ABC television studios, a huge toy store and the home of MTV’s live shows.  The square is also located in the heart of Broadway. Theatre loves can buy tickets from the ticket centre located in the centre of the square.

Celebrity spotters can make the most of their break to New York by heading to Madame Tussauds, where visitors can rub shoulders with everyone from Brad Pitt to Marilyn Monroe.  Open 365 days a year it is a highly popular tourist attraction definitely one to remember! For those that prefer the chance to meet real life celebrities, Madison Square Garden offers an All Access Tour package where fans can take a trip around the arena and hopefully bump into one of their sporting or music heroes.

On your break to New York why not catch a ball game? If you're very, very lucky you may even catch the ball. Of course you can't keep it but it is still something to treasure. And if baseball isn't your thing then New York also has major sports teams for all the big american sports, Americans are very fanatical about their sport and any match becomes a major event. This makes any game a worthwhile way to spend some of your holiday, even if you don't always understand the rules.

For a more relaxing tourist experience the famous central park is home to a range of attractions including a zoo, skating rink and a playground. Couples can explore the park on a horse drawn carriage ride, perfect for those wanting a romantic break to New York. Head to the Rockefeller Centre for the ultimate shopping and dining experience, throughout the Christmas period the whole centre is turned into a winter wonderland complete with Christmas tree and illuminated ice rink.
